I created a digital vision board last week and made it my desktop wallpaper so I got used to seeing the various images and words that keep me connected to my goals, places I’d like to visit, and experiences I’d like to have…

…On my board were images of the cherry blossoms in Japan, as it is a place I really want to visit someday. A week later, I discover our local park is having a Cherry Blossom Community picnic - with crafts, harp music and Japanese writing. We spent the afternoon there with friends and our children. A beautiful day and a reminder to be open to any form that your desired experiences might take. It might not have been Japan (yet!) but it was stunning, magical, memorable and all the more special knowing this is a place on our doorstep.

It never ceases to amaze me just how different life looks and feels after getting a good night’s sleep. After a tough week of very little sleep, lots of deadlines, baby night feeds etc, I am doubling down on my priority for sleep. Whether that is through earlier nights, naps, or the odd lie in. I’m grabbing it wherever I can. The difference in terms of energy levels, hopefulness, confidence, creatively and happiness is worth a few hours of apparently lost productivity

When we think about ‘quality of life’, we tend to focus on things like a good job, a loving relationship, nice home, travel, health and so on. In other words, our ‘life situation’ - the external things, people, places and circumstances that we find ourselves in. But when we focus on the ‘quality of our aliveness’, we are talking about your moment-to-moment experience. Your vibrancy. Your presence. In our hectic world, we’re so busy taking care of all the things that we think will ensure quality of life that we neglect to give any time to nurturing the quality of our aliveness. Our physical, mental, emotional and purposeful energy. It is only through our quality of our aliveness that we can experience our life circumstances. It’s hard to truly enjoy any of our life circumstances if the quality of our aliveness is depleted and weak

Eudai……whaaaaat?

Eudaimonia, from the Ancient Greek, relates to the condition of human flourishing. Eudaimonia goes beyond more superficial definitions of wellbeing as fleeting states of happiness by focusing on actualising our human potential and living a ‘good life’. It’s the energy of purpose (one of the four types of energy we explore in an Energy MOT session).

Unlike physical energy, boosting your purpose energy towards a state of flourishing is more of an art than a science. It’s a more of a perspective or paradigm we tune into rather than a state we arrive at after a sequence of habits or practices. Having said that, I think that we can adopt practices that are in the spirit of, and are in service of, Eudaimonia. Whether at an individual or organisational level, there are ways of being that enliven, enrich and energise. Ways of being that tap into our innate impulse to thrive and grow. When people tell me they’ve lost their mojo, we work on boosting their purpose energy first and use Eudaimonia as our guiding philosophy.

When we feel overwhelmed, it can be hard to know where to begin. I find a helpful first step is to get clear on what type of overwhelm you're experiencing. I use the typology devised by Burnett and Evans (2020) to help clients work out whether they have:

- Happy overwhelm - you mostly enjoy what you're doing but you just have too much of it
- Hydra overwhelm - Just like the mythical monster with 9 heads, you have too many different responsibilities, you're reporting to too many managers at the same time or running too many client projects or side hustles concurrently. You might lack control over your work and feel bombarded from all angles
- hyper overwhelm - you're going at a hundred miles an hour. It might feel exhilarating and exhausting at the same time. It's the energy of a sprint rather than a marathon. The problem is when the sprint goes on too long it is unsustainable.

Each of these 'flavours' of overwhelm will lend themselves to different solutions, but the first step is to simply know what enemy you are dealing with!

On a tough day, wisely managing your energy applies even more. What can you do to conserve the energy you have left? It might be hard to physically recharge so what about giving your emotional energy a boost? Today has been one of those days for me. Just tough. Not helped by two out of the four of our family having Covid. So this afternoon, this was my attempt at using my low energy wisely. Lying on the floor with my three year old under blankets looking up at her star projector listening to kids audio books. It helped a lot. So, if you’re also having one of those days, know that it’s not always about having high energy, it’s about using what you do have as wisely as possible. Thinking and reflection is great for a lot of things. It is not so great for when we are feeling stuck. We can end up chasing our own tails when we follow our thoughts or feelings down the rabbit hole. To get unstuck, unlock new solutions and new perspectives, DO something new. It doesn't need to be anything big. Go for a walk. Change your posture. Take a shower. Shifting your energy this way is a lot easier than trying to think your way into a new way of thinking

Kids are great for keeping you grounded aren’t they! I remember taking this photo not long after my first daughter was born and noticing our familiar Buddha statue in the living room suddenly adorned with a teething necklace and surrounded by cuddly toys! I like the image because it reminds me of the importance of balance and of integrating the spiritual with the everyday (actually, there’s not really any integration necessary as they’re the same thing). I get frustrated with images of wellness that don’t look anything like most people’s real lives. Flourishing and thriving does not (just) happen on a yoga retreat or on a mountain top. It is not the reserve of those who drink green tea and wake up at 5.30 everyday to meditate (but if that’s your thing then that’s cool too!). The point is not to critique anyone’s lifestyle at all but to remind everyone that human flourishing is just that - HUMAN. It happens because of, not in spite of, your real, messy, imperfect, noisy, life. Embrace it all 🙏

Instead of being a pessimist or an optimist, be an optimalist! An optimalist is someone who doesn’t falsely sugar coat reality but someone who seeks the best possible outcome given the constraints of our individual realities.

I got this one from the Brian Johnson’s incredible Optimize programme and it’s something I now use to focus my intentions for the day.

Confession: I am kind of rubbish at exercise! 🙈

I’m about as flexible as a metal pole. I run like Phoebe in THAT episode of friends. I’m the one jumping in the opposite direction to everyone else in the class. Zumba? Forget it! In school, I played my own game of dodgeball whilst everyone else played football (true!) and I was put in the D group for PE (how sad looking back that they did this then).

Despite all this, I have SO much fun exercising now. It’s more fun I think because I’m not trying to be ‘good’ at it. Im not competing with anyone, not even myself. I laugh a lot at myself and make my instructors laugh a lot too. I enjoy the movement, the buzz, the people, the energy. This pic was taken at a Buggy Fitness class that my then 3 month old slept all the way through - win!

This is a question I hear a lot in various forms. Firstly, its important to be really honest with yourself. Do you actually want to start new habits? Its absolutely ok to just want to rest. That might be the wisest choice for you. BUT if you really are tired of feeling lethargic and want to change your habits then there are things you can try. Just today I have been listening to a lecture by @leeholdenqi that sheds some light on this. He describes how our energy becomes stagnant and can sink like water. We don't feel like doing much at all. So we need to do some movement - quick, easy, low effort to - to get our energy flowing again. Lee teaches Qi Gong so he has some suggestions from that practice. But you could do a couple of star jumps. Whatever. Just something to act as a bridge between the tired you and the energised you. Good luck!

Its fair to say that for a lot of my life, I've suffered from a disconnect between my aspiration to live an energised life and the daily practices and habits that fuel such a life. I am making 2022 the year I nurture new habits. I say nurture as this shouldn't feel like something harsh but something life-giving. The habits I am adopting this year are:

- Drinking 2400 ml of water everyday
- Flossing everyday (our dental health is suprisingly connected to longevity and heart health)
- Completing my apple watch activity rings everyday
- 5 minutes of coherent breathing everyday
- 5 minutes of qi gong every day
- 10 minutes of writing on my book everyday
I'm also doing regular pilates and yin yoga at the gym a couple of times a week. I'll probably add some more habits in soon but so far these ones are really working for me. I don't do them at a set time each day as having a baby and a toddler makes the day too unpredictable for a strict routine. I'll keep you posted on how these go. What new habits are you adopting this year?

You are amazing. You have evolved over thousands of years to be self-regulating, self-healing snd self-aware. You are infinitely complex yet beautifully simple in your elegance. Your body is adept at producing energy and delivering it to precisely where it is needed. Your set point is harmony and balance. All you need to do is let your mind-body do it’s thing. Fall radically in awe of yourself as an energy system and the rest follows so much more easily
